In broiling cities like New Orleans, the health system faces off against heat stroke, Drew Hawkins
"Extreme summer heat is increasing in the United States," says Claudia Brown, a health scientist with the CDC's Climate and Health Program. "And climate projections are indicating that extreme heat events will be more frequent and intense in the coming decades."

Heat Is Not a Metaphor, Alexis Pauline Gumbs
“I want to write a poem about how capitalism is a sinking ship and how the extreme wealth-hoarding and extractive polluting systems that benefit a few billionaires are destroying our planet and killing us all. But the orcas beat me to it. Off the Iberian coast of Europe, the orcas collaborated and taught each other how to sink the yachts of the superrich. They literally sank the boats. While Twitter cheered.”
“I hope people see this as just an example of how different internet life or blog life or your perception of a case from the internet comments can be from what actually is happening in the courtroom or what actually is happening in real life. I think it also says something about courtroom literacy and court literacy for the people who run the courts. The idea that this was such a high-profile case and so much interest in it, why aren't all the court documents available online?”

Scrolling Through Poetry: A Conversation with @poetryisnotaluxury, Elizabeth Metzger
“I have always loved setting a mood, and finding connections in poems came quickly. Organizing these photographs/poems on my phone felt a lot like making a mixtape. I realized I was putting them in categories, like moon, mom, Monday—accidentally putting together a series of anthologies, so I began organizing an actual anthology in the form of the page, inspired by themes of love and loss.”

Watches
I’ve been rewatching The Real Housewives of Atlanta because, as those who know me well know, I love to laugh. I think this clip is still my favorite snippet of reality TV ever — Shereé’s delivery of “I just wanted to shift it a bit” sends me every time.
As always, feel free to share this post, or the links within it, with a friend. Wishing you all a generative, joyful week, full of all your favorite things.
Oh and my listening this week is Jon Batiste's World Radio. He's a genius.
Consider reading Mad Honey by Jodie Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan. Lots of twists and surprises. I am plowing through Suits on Netflix. I missed it first time around.
